Bleak, disturbing and yet fascinating at the same time. This dark drama takes place against the backdrop of a wintry village steeped in snow. Our main character, is a man with quite a troubled past, who buries himself in his work and keeps much of his family and everyone around him shut out. When news of his mother’s death reaches him, he resists the idea of ever seeing the village of his birth or attending her funeral. take it or leave it The film is in the not so new tradition of West German Filmemacher, i.e., bleakness, twisted behavior, generational guilt, dysfunctional relations and relationships are all part of the pattern. It’s a very disturbing story about a messed up/completely disturbed family without an ounce of decency and respect for each other, filled with incest, anger, a loveless marriage, indecency between parents and their grown children, a cheating husband, parents that Don’t mind walking naked around their kids and oh, the bathroom scene really made me sick to my stomach.
